From 15 to 24 January our Freiland Pantry, just right for this cold time of year, will be at the special display hosted by the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, whose slogan this year translates as :
"Seeds of the future : innovation and diversity enhance the quality of life"
and at the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) Berlin 2010
It is now common knowledge that global warming and the energy situation are forcing us to make changes. In this part of the world, we have six months of winter, during which there is little to harvest. So let's spend a few moments thinking about how we can use winter vegetables that store well and high-quality local produce to a create a varied and interesting range of menus.
We would like to show you a few amazingly simple solutions.
Attractions to experience at our stand:
An eye-catching model of a pantry and its contents, plus a walk-in root cellar with local stored vegetables;
A model of an in-ground storage solution, of interest to all visitors who have their own garden or access to some land where they can store vegetables;
And a potting table with wild root vegetables.
Organic growing is a good way of ensuring healthy PFLANZENWACHSTUM crops and is also an opportunity to escape from the trap of industrial farming methods.
Throughout International Green Week, scriptwriter Sylvia Schirmer will be updating her wiki each day, with tips and ideas on the following topics:
Feasible ways of eating a natural diet based on local produce;
Innovative and effective climate protection ideas that everyone can put into practice;
Practical, everyday tips that are good for your wallet, good for your health, and will help conserve the planet's natural resources;
Teaching practical skills
For example:
How to make an in-ground vegetable store out of the drum of an old washing machine:
Some inventive vegetable lovers bury the drums of old, unwanted washing machines into their garden. They line them with straw and then fill them with root vegetables. The door of the drum makes for easy access and the drum itself keeps mice away from the vegetables.
