In the World Health Organization's (WHO) Ottawa Charter of 1986 we read: "Health is created by caring for oneself and others, by being able to take decisions and have control over one's life circumstances, and by ensuring that the society one lives in creates conditions that allow the attainment of health by all its members."
The challenge for the future: creating healthy, socially cohesive cities.
What role can will grassroots movements play in this in the future?
The public sector shoulders a great deal of the responsibility here, but its coffers are empty and its accountants are prescribing job cuts to cure the problem.
What people need in the future is help to help themselves, including autonomous management of interests at grassroot level. This will facilitate sustainability and health in a socially cohesive city in the face of increasing financial pressure.
